Solar Cooker Project

My aunty cooks using straw and dried grass as fuel. If she had a solar cooker then she could use less straw and grass and save it instead for her household's livestock.

Solar Cooker Project

The villagers in Gongma Village have a meeting to vote who are the poorest families. These families will then receive solar cookers through my solar cooker project.

Herdsmen

The fog came in suddenly as I prepared to take this photograph. The herdsmen hurried to chase their livestock down the mountain before it would become too unclear to see.

Lazi Festival

The big lazi arrow usually goes first into the lazi base. It takes long time insert arrows because they are so big and heavy. Many monks and village men must work together, some pushing from behind and some pulling from in front with a rope.

Lazi Festival

During the Lazi festival many people wear Tibetan robes, the majority of whom are women. Here a man prostrates very sincerely. People say a prayer as they prostrate that translates as: ‘I hope that all sentient beings are happy and healthy’.

Lazi Festival

To my understanding, in the past when there was a lazi festival, almost everyone in our hometown wore Tibetan robes. I don't know why, but these days the population of participants wearing Tibetan robes is decreasing. A little boy (center, wearing hat) who was wearing a Tibetan robe on this day attracted my attention. I wondered why other people don’t wear them, since I think it makes people look better.

Making an Offering

When the offering has proceeded to its half-way point, the ritual participants come to the altar with glung rta (wind horses) and liquor to make offerings. After they have made their offerings, they go back to their line and continue circumambulating the courtyard.

Dhem Woman

A Dhem woman comes to see the horse racing festival in Yushu. Dhem people are from the western part of Tibetan Sichuan. She wears a hairstyle typical of this area. Decorations made from turquoise and copper, or sometimes silver, are worn with a sun hat.

Spectators

It was hard to see the shows at the Yushu horse racing festival because there were many people. Those who climbed higher had a better view.
