Desertification in Xinghai County has become a serious environmental issue in the last two decades.
On the way from Huka Township to Xinghai County Town, there is an arrangement of prayer flags beside the road. Flags are added as a prayer for people’s safety.

The fog came in suddenly as I prepared to take this photograph. The herdsmen hurried to chase their livestock down the mountain before it would become too unclear to see.
I took this picture on Huka Mountain which is 3380 meters above sea level. It is a holy mountain. Because many car accidents have happened here, people set up a lot of prayer flags.

On this typical morning in my hometown, this man had just come back from his family’s greenhouse.
On an October morning my aunt pours hot water into her hand tractor in order to make sure it will work well in the field. October is usually harvesting season.
My aunt burns straw and grass to cook a meal.
This Hui woman and her husband live with five of their grandchildren in this house. The grandchildren are fatherless and their mother has remarried into another village. It is now the grandparents' responsibility to care for five young children. Life is very hard for them.

I was taking picture of their house for my solar cooker project when these children asked to have their picture taken.
Mawang Zhong is a Chinese woman who lives alone. Her son and daughter went to work in Germu (Golmud) last year. She is now 78 years old. She is one of the chosen residents to receive a solar cooker.
